Narciso Contreras
Libya : a human marketplace
Narciso Contreras is a documentary photojournalist born in Mexico City in 1975. Since 2010, he has been working on the humanitarian consequences of conflicts, the economy and wars in South Asia, North Africa, the Middle East, Europe and Mexico.

He has helped to document issues such as the ethnic war in Myanmar, the conflict in the Gaza Strip, the political upheaval in Istanbul and the tribal conflict in Libya. His work has received international recognition for documenting the war in Syria, the military coup in Egypt, the war in Yemen and the trafficking and enslavement of migrants in Libya in 2016.
Narciso's photographs have been exhibited in galleries, museums and photography festivals in Europe, Asia, the United States and Mexico. His photographic work of the war in Syria is part of the collection of the Dubrovnik War Museum, and in 2017 his photographic exhibition ‘Libya: A Human Market’ at the Saatchi Gallery in London, was recognised as the most visited photojournalism exhibition in the world and third in the photography category with over 520,000 visitors.
His work has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize, POYi (Images of the Year), the Carmignac Photojournalism Award and the Lucas Dolega Prize, as well as twice being a finalist for the World Report Award, a finalist for the FotoEvidence Book Award-World Press Photo Prize and the Bayeaux War Correspondents Prize, among others.
Narciso teaches and gives courses, workshops and conferences at UNAM, EAF, ITESM, Universidad Iberoamericana, Princeton University and the Frontline Club of London.
Narciso is currently working on long-term documentary projects based on the concepts of ‘mass displacement of human beings’, ‘environmental migration’ and ‘trans-modernity, identity and decolonisation’
